Alongside the Gorge of Samaria and the Gorge of Imbros, Irini Gorge is amongst the most famous gorges in Western Crete. Thousands of guests are passing the gorge of Irini towards Sougia Beach.Â
The Gorge is open all year round and is way less crowded which makes it a great hiking opportunity both during summertime as well as during wintertime. The descent and the difficulty are also significantly lower, which makes hiking a great opportunity for everyone: let’s start! Â
Irini Gorge is probably the most valuable gorge in Chania considering its wildlife fauna. Many endangered species, many of them being herbs, spices and indigenous plants reside there, and because of the astonishing views and the easy downhill hike, Irini Gorge is amongst the most famous trails in Chania.Â
Our tour starts early in the morning, in order to head to the Gorge of Agia Irini Entrance. A short breakfast along the road is being done, before entering the 7.5 km long trail. The Hike is easy, as it is mostly downhill, on a clearly visible and marked path.Â
We stand astonished in the Natura 200 Environment and we take photos of the breathtaking cliffs and narrow passages of the gorge. A riverbank is following our route, which makes the tour a refreshing experience, especially during the autumn, or winter holiday months.
Our 4 hours hike following the river that flows through the gorge of Agia Irinia comes to an end at the picturesque and desolate village of Koustogerako. Â Our guide will wait for us there, in order to transport us to the neighbouring seashore village of Sougia.Â
Time-free will be given there, to swim in crystal clear waters and enjoy traditional delicacies in the various Cretan Taverns overlooking the South Cretan Sea. With precious memories, we return to Chania centre in the evening.Â
