Our travel agency in Crete specialises in history tours in Chania & all over Greece: Many clients are always asking us how many German war cemeteries are in Greece. The answer is 2. The one in Maleme, that we visit with our professional historian on our famous Battle of Crete Chania Tour and the other in Central Greece, close to Athens, in Dionyssos settlement, close to Marathon Lake. Dionyssos German War Cemetery is also found in historiography as the Rapendosa German War Cemetery.

Maleme German War Cemetery- Chania, Crete

The 4465 fallen German soldiers that are buried in Maleme, on Hill 107, overlooking the historic airfield, are all casualties of the Battle of Crete and the second world war: It has been built in the historic Hill 107, and various bunkers and lookouts can be still found nearby. The cemetery extends into a vast field and has two distinctive blocks for better identification. On both of those war cemeteries in Greece, there are logbooks, where relatives and people of interest can search for a specific soldier and identify his last resting point. A vast majority of the fallen are Paratroopers, and most of them below the age of 25, designating the tragic consequences of the war.

German War Cemetery in Dionysos – Rapendosa

Despite its smaller size, the Dionysos- Rapendosa German War Cemetery is home to 9973 fallen German Soldiers of World War 2 and 68 of World War One. It attracts very little attention, while this cemetery is not located in a central spot, only history enthusiasts and relatives drive there.

This cemetery and the German War Cemetery in Maleme are being directed by the “ Volksbund” the German War Graves Commission and both are in excellent shape. The vast majority of our clients participating in our history tours in Crete and in Greece can ultimately see similarities, both in the cemetery’s designs, as well as their flowers, their signs and so on.

War Cemeteries in Greece – Unknown Trivia

A big difference between those two cemeteries is that in Dionysos Rapendosa Cemetery, the fallen soldiers are buried together en masse, while in the Maleme German War Cemetery, as well as in the British Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda Bay area, the fallen soldiers are resting by two, and individually on the latter.
